Ukraine would be justified in asking why they did not get a penalty, says Mark Clattenburg

Ukraine could consider themselves unlucky after being denied a penalty to draw level with Wales during their World Cup play-off. 

Oleksandr Petrakov’s side agonisingly missed out on a place in Qatar after suffering a 1-0 defeat by Wales in Cardiff. 

Wales snatched the lead after Andriy Yarmolenko headed in an own goal from Gareth Bale’s free-kick in the first half.

But just minutes later, Ukraine should have had a clear chance to equalise before the break after Joe Allen brought Yarmolenko down inside the box. 

However, in heartbreak for the Ukrainians, referee Mateu Lahoz denied the nailed-on penalty appeal from the captain.

Ukraine would be justified in asking why they weren’t given a chance to equalise from the spot. 

This was a clear foul by Joe Allen on Andriy Yarmolenko and I cannot understand why VAR didn’t correct a clearly incorrect call.

If he’d been sent to his screen, I’m sure referee Mateu Lahoz would have reversed his original decision of no penalty. But he didn’t get that chance.
